You
will
discover you are in good company. Almost since the
beginning of time, the flowers have mesmerized humans – with
them having such
varied species with so many colors and all the many different types of
blooms.
Any garden would be happy to have this flower in it.
Orchids
have
always been survivors so to speak. Some of the
species grow in the most unlikely places. They grow in places like the
world’s
rain forest, the tundra with its perennially frozen ground, and even in
some
places underground. It is not surprising why these flowers have
mesmerized us
as long as they have.
This
is not
the only interesting fact about orchids. Their
seeds fall from the plant and get propelled by the wind. They
also
setup this
symbiotic type relationship with a certain fungus. This fungus collects
minerals and water but not just for itself, but also for the baby
seedlings of
the orchids.
The
orchids
then in turn provide the fungus with sugars that
are made during photosynthesis.
If
you are
just starting on your journey of growing orchids,
you will be happy to discover that you can grow them out in your
garden, on
your windowsill inside, or in the confines of a greenhouse. Why just
try one
place? Grow them using all 3 places! Some of these orchids have leaves
that are
broad pleated and have waxy looking flowers, which last a long time, as
in the
Lycaste. This one was named for a Greek nymph – and
reportedly it was dedicated
to the pretty daughter of Priam, who happened to be the last reigning
king of
Troy.
The
Masdevallia is another orchid to consider – you may have
noticed this one. It is named for Jose Madeval, who was a physician for
Charles
II of the country of Spain. This species has been in many gardens over
the
centuries. These flowers that are delicate looking and they are shaped
like and
upside down heart but on the ends of each lobe of the heart they have
tails.
This species has a truly interesting bloom.
I
am still
thrilled over growing the 3 types of orchids that
I grow – and have found
that each one is totally individual, distinct, and
drastically unique style of blooms
from the other one. Not just in
shape but
also color, size, and especially scent (I love the Oncidin Sharry Baby
that I
grow because it has the same aroma as chocolate. That is what I said!
On top of
that – it is simple to propagate in your home in a pot.)
